LDS Baptisms for the dead..?

Yesterday I was reading the thread about sealings for the dead, which was the first I'd ever heard of sealings at all, but all very interesting. This morning I found out that if the information I have been given is accurate my GG grandmother was not only sealed, but also baptised after her death! I don't understand how that can be possible. Her parents had emmigrated to Utah and by the look of it her mother became a mormon, or maybe married one, soon after arriving there. I really don't understand how anyone can be baptized after their death. In my GGG grandfather's case almost 90 years after his death. There are also entries for "endowment" which I've never heard of. Does anyone know what that means? I have no problem with mormons or their sealings, but I don't think I'd be too impressed if someone tried to baptise me into another church without me knowing it. Surely they don't really do this? Is my information just wrong? Really confused!!

That's right, Christina, and explains why some parishes aren't on their database- the local church wouldn't allow them to do it to their dead parishioners! Maggie

The LDS website does mention they baptise people who weren't baptised in their lifetime. In my GGG grandfather's case maybe he has something to do with the mormons in the short time between his arrival in America and his death, so that could make sense even if he was christened C of E. He also has American mormon descendants so it was probably them. But to baptise my GG grandmother who never had anything to do with the mormons? I just don't know whether to find it offensive or just silly.

Oh well. It's a bit out of my control so I think I'll just stop worrying about it. Maybe I won't share too much of my information with these particular people though in case they want to baptise anyone I actually knew. I'm not convinced it's even true anyway - a lot of the information seems very unreliable, incorrect birthdates and birthplaces. And Sheffield is not in Staffordshire!!

Please don't let this worry you. If they did baptise someone into their faith after their death it doesn't affect what they themselves really believed at the time of their death does it? Ann Glos
