Thanks, Paul, I'm going to have to wait anyway. It's a pity I can't get any further with this line as they moved around so much they are by far the most interesting of all the people I've found to date!

In most cases the BMD registrations for Military, etc were in an appendix to the main relevant index, and may not necessarily be in the quarter of the event especially if the event took place overseas. As far as I know they are not on 1837 yet, but will be in the future. Paul

Keith, I'm beginning to think you are right. I wonder if they were christened.......

Hi Anne, the census just says 'tailor'. I looked at all the other households up and down the street to see who was there, and discovered they were nearly all naval. Of course it could be a coincidence but then in 1891 the son I am after, Harry, turned up at Woolwich barracks. This is a definite brick wall as I can't go further up this branch without making sure I've got the right man. But thanks anyway.

Is it possible that it is the royal Marines you should be looking at? What does it give for occupation in the censuses? My Gt grandfather was a tailor in the royal Marines, but it did mention the fact that he was R Marine in censuses. wher in Portsmouth was he living to make you think he was military? Ann glos

Thanks for replying. Yes, I know where they were in 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901. The only thing I haven't found is the birth record of the son I am interested in, Harry Locke, born 1867/1868 in Rochester, or of his older brother George or his younger sister Emma. I'm told military births, even in the UK are not always on 1837 on-line (I've ploughed through all the variations of name and date, also Medway parish records on line) and I don't know what else to do!

Have you found them on a census? Give us the names and dates and perhaps we can find them. LN

One of my ancestors, a tailor, took his family from Rochester to Portsmouth and lived in an area with lots of sailors so I considered he might have been with the navy. His son turned up later at Woolwich Barracks. Army? Despite the children being born supposedly in Rochester I haven't found a birth record for any of them. Not born at sea. The one thing I haven't yet tried is the army birth records which I understand are a different listing for 1865 - 1875. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Helen
