Dear Anne I had scant information regarding a relative who went to the US via Canada after the IWW. I had a vague idea of State of settlement.I have now traced the consequent family and am in regular contact with my (89)mother's cousin (86) by e-mail. I simply went with hunches albeit researching a fairly unusual name (i.e. 1+half thousand on this site). Using accurate birth details from 1837 site I looked at Ancestry U.S. SSecurity Index Records (free) with the help of a couple of kind researchers ,then went on to look up telephone numbers for (free) people that had the name in the region of my mother's first cousin's recorded death (S.Security record). I also used contact boards at Ancestry and CousinConnect. The only expense was phoning an answer phone a couple of times in the States ! Good luck Mary

Anne: Here's a Canadian website that has SOME passenger records, but you do have to pay to order the record. What I've done is check to see if there is a record, and then tried to find it free elsewhere. I've also purchased a few records and have been very satisfied with the price and the service. http://www.ingeneas(.)com/free/index.html

Morning All - thanks for your replies. Yes, it is quite likely that she went via Canada as she married a French-Canadian - but again, have searched all ports out of England and all possible entry points, including Canada.........I can't believe our rellies can be so elusive :(

Anne: I don't know about the 1900's, but during the 1800's it was less expensive for people to arrive in Canada and then come down to the States. So, some people actually booked ships to Canada, knowing they would then travel to the U.S. All of my ancestors left England and Ireland for Canada during the 1800's and I've yet to find one mentioned anywhere (as a passenger). Others have found theirs, though, so there is hope. :~)

Perhaps she travelled via Canada (ie took a ship to Canada and later crossed into the States).

From the UK in the early 1900s ship was the only way to get to the USA. Passenger aircraft did not commence service until the 1930s.

What other ways would people have travelled to the States in the early 1900's?? Following advice from the kind folks on here, I spent last night searching ships passenger lists for my Gt Aunt who emigrated - and altho I shall go back for another look this eve., I can't find her!! Were transatlantic flights going then? if so where can I look? Someone at work even suggested air-ships/zeppelins lol..........what do you think??
