Thanks for answering so quickly, Helen! I had thought of the LDS, but am unsure whether John would have been under the name Uren or under the unknown stepfather's name. What do you think? He would have been about 10 or so I think when they left UK. Sue.

Susan Someone else will probably have some info about passenger lists, but in the meantime, if your relatives were in the USA in 1881, have you tried searching for them on the census on www.familysearch.org? That would hopefully tell you where they were in the USA and what occupations they had. Helen

Yes, if my beloved grandmother was still alive, she'd be 102 yrs old today. Happy Birthday, wherever you are, Nana! I'm trying to find out about her father, John (Humphrey?)Uren, who went to America from West Ham with his mother and stepfather (name unknown) in the 1880s-90s, then returned to live near the Ventons in West Ham, in the 1890s I think. He married Elizabeth Venton in Sept. Q. 1900, although his name wrongly appears on the index as John Urin. What is my best bet to try to track down his movements to and from America? I haven't a clue which part or when exactly. Did most go to New York? Is Ellis Island the best bet? Sue (in NZ)
