Jenny It's quite easy to mix names up - some sites search forms put surname first, others surname second. And of course lots of names can be either - Thomas is a very common example. If you search the Eng & Wales civil index on Ancestry and put a name in the first name box it will find it whichever order it appears, so if you put Ethel it will have Ann Ethel Smith Barbara Ethel May Smith Ethel Jones Ethel Mary Jones etc. This is quite useful for those relatives whose first name isn't the one they use in every day life.

after escorting my aunt to the eye hospital and having to wait 3 hours for transport home we discovered they had her name as miss turner surname ethel so I checked on genes when I finaly got home to see if ethel was actually a name and it is, then I looked on the 1901 census site and it looks as if loads of people entered their name the wrong way round, have a look, just put ethel as surname and female and search, if you cant find your ancestors maybe they did the same!. jenny
