My boss received one of these letters today. Don't know where these people are getting their info but my boss has no interest in genealogy and is not registered with any FH site. As professional researchers it makes you wonder why they don't mention that they are accredited members of a professional body.

THis was posted on the chat board of this site earlier today I have taken the liberty to copy and paste on to this thread (hope you don't mind Albert) ------------------------------------------------------------------- Albert Gosnall (09/08/2004 13:02:56) Beware William Pince Geanealogist and Chairman of S.G.N,Genealogical Foundation He is writing to people he has found on Various mailing list through Snail Mail setting out an offer to provide you with your own Family Tree for around £50. You will be better off becoming a full member of this Web Group it will save you money, better still join your own local Family History Society. My son had one as well, so it looks like a mass-mailing scam of some sort.

I also received a letter like this last week. They claimed that as a descendent I would be included - unlikely since I'm only a Gornall thru marriage! Rather sneakily they claim to be a Dutch registered company so no-one can find out any info about them. Even had a look in the phone directory to see if they are registered but nothing came up. I'll save my money and spend it on something much more useful - like look ups and certificates. Mandi

Sandra, This definitely seems dodgy to me. I received a similar mailing last week. The letter claimed to have a book on the Leadley family name which supposedly also included me. The letter was addressed to Mr R.E. Leadley (my wife's initials which filled me with confidence!). The small print at the end of the letter also had a clause which if you read between the lines said 'we can't guarentee that any of the entries are correct!

I had the opportunity several years ago to buy "The worldwide book of Everitts". I think it was a list of 20,000-odd names and addresses of Everitts.

What will this book tell you that you don't know or can't find out by yourselves? Libraries are full of books about the origins of surnames/forenames.

have a look this similar thread on another forum http://usenet.lineages(.)co(.)uk/article3477-1-1.htm I'd also be very wary of any publishing company that doesn't have a website in this day and age I'd say its all a big scam

My father has had a letter through from the publishers above offering him the chance to buy a book on his family name.I would appreciate anyone's views on whether to buy it or not.If we order now we'll get 35% discount the book is still £34.95.The publisher is chairman of S.G.N Genealogical Foundation, has anyone heard of them?We did buy a book before from another source and all it had about the family name was names and addresses. Thanks for reading this message Sandra
