Hello Joan, There is certainly a reference to a John Taylor on the CWGC site, husband of Sara Ellen Taylor, died 01.07.1916 who lived at 14 Trafalgar Street Consett. If you want to have a look: I searched using initial and surname and the year 1916 only. From the results of 698, he is no 250. The 23rd Battallion Tyneside Scottish was part of the 4th Tyneside Scottish Regiment of the Northumberland Fusiliers. Is this any help??? Do you have any other family names? There are not many John Taylors shown on the 1881 census with the d.o.b 1880/81 with the head of the household shown as Henry but I need more clues to see if any one of them relates. Magsx

Marion -My Grandad John Taylor was 27 on 6th Jan 1908 when he married Sarah Ellen Wilkinson in Gateshead. His father Henry was then deceased. John Taylor was killed on the first day at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, so no death cetrtificate was issued. His Army records indicate he was born in Consett, Co Durham - but this is definitely wrong. He served in the 23rd Bn Tyneside Scottish who only recruited people with 'Scottish' connections - It's a long shot really - I just wish I'd been born with a rare surname! Regards from Joan Wild in North Shields.

Joan If your grandfather was 27 when he married in 1908, then either he had already had his birthday that year, in which case he was born 1881, or he was about to have his 28th birthday in which case he was born 1880. Have you tried to find his parents on the 1881 census - its free at www.familysearch.org. This would give you an idea where the family was either just before or just after he was born - if you find him with them that is a bonus and will help you to narrow the search for his birth. Consett was in the Durham registration district, so his birth should be volume 10a if that information was correct. Good luck Helen
