Do bear in mind too that most of the info on LDS is not directly from registers, but from transcripts of registers. I have come across some dreadful howlers in Norfolk like the wrong parish given (they didn't realise there were transcriptions for two parishes on the microfilm) and wrong year (they did not understand the old style of dating). Iris If you have Norfolk ancestors, the best place to do any research is in Norwich itself. If you google Norfolk transcriptions, you should come up with an online site, but lots of Norfolk registers have not been filmed or fiched, so you have to visit the Record Office to see them. Try A2A, nrocat and NOAH for references as all these sites have useful Norfolk information.

Norfolk parish records will be at the Norfolk Records Office in Norwich. Google to find the website which will give details of what they hold and when they are open. nell [don't suppose any of your rellies are from Limpenhoe/Hardley/Cantley/Halvergate or Langham are they?]

Original parish records would not be held in a local library unless it can double up as a diocesan record office. Unless catastrophe has overtaken the records, they should survive if as recent as 1800. Phillimore's atlas is very out of date, but would list basic info such as when parish registers start and where held. If the National Index of Parish Registers has a volume for your county, this will give much more detailed information. If parish records don't survive for the period, there are still wills, land tax assessments, poor law records, manorial records.... If you can get to the appropriate record office, there's masses of stuff out there.

Cherie, I'm not sure about this but were parts of Thornton administered by Halifax - Northowram as was Queensbury? It might be worth ringing Halifax library. xx dave

If you go to the LDS site and look under library catologue do a place search for where you want the records for. You can find what they have, for the area. I got a film for Tynemouth which I had bought 5 marriage certificates from and I still found 3 more marriages. Copies of these cost me 40p each and I haven`t finished looking yet. Remember you will have to order the filims you want and wait for them. But it beats having to travel miles and if you can get the one you want it saves buying certificates. Hi Cherie Just check with your FHC before you go, i went to mine in Peterborough on tuesday only to find it closed until September 8th for summer holidays David

Cherie Ask the libraries if they have the Bishops Transcripts on microflim. They had to keep backup copies of the bmd's so you will often find that if the parish registers are missing the info you want will be on the Bishops Transcripts. If your local libraries don't have them then the Borthwick at York does. Jeanette :-)

Hi Cherie, If Julie can't come up with anything, I would suggest you ring one of those centres and ask them what records they have for the area you are looking in. I only looked for marriages in my centre and they seemed pretty complete for what I wanted. I was looking at Sheffield records in Chorley, Lancs LDS. I believe the centre at Sheffield is very good. Hi Cherie, Your nearest LDS centre is Hull, Sheffield or York. If you go to www.familysearch.org and click on Family History Centres tab it will give you telephone numbers and addresses of the above centres. Good luck with your searching, Margaret

hi mary..fogot to say ive rang bradford library,and archives/history centre,thats all they have that i know about.How do i find out where theres a lds centre please????

i rang the library nearest to the little town where half my family originate..they do have the parish records but only certain yrs..which is further back than i am.does that mean the other parish bits are missing/destroyed??? if ive no info on susannah binns b.thornton 1807c how can i get further back???
