If you can't find them on the 1881 census......

I too have had problems with all the mis-spellings on the LDS site. My Bryenton family were down as Brainton, but wouldn't come up when I put any kind of spelling in. I finally found the approximate area they were in and just kept clicking "next household" until I found them........very tedious, but it worked! Regards Barbara

I've found that you have to be very imaginative if a relative doesn't immediately pop up on the 1881 census. I was having real problems finding Taffinder, in the end I resorted to putting in Aaffinder, Baffinder etc...and there they were ...Laffinder!

Thanks for the help Helen and Joy, He could possibly have been in tha army but I have no way of telling. On the '91 and '01 census he was living in Brighton, where he was married and also died. I doubt the Doone misspelling is him but who knows..............? I have tried Bone, Moon, Bron,Boan etc but the problem I have is that without a birth cert for him I can not be sure of his mother's name and could go off on a tangent and follow a wrong path. Many thanks for all your suggestions, I will keep hunting. Pam

Be aware that when you click on All Resources, it will only bring up a maximum of 25 of each type, but if you go to the bottom of a section, eg 1881 Census, it is likely to say Matches: Census/1881 British Census - over 25. If you click this link, it will bring up the other records, which could be in their hundreds.

Hi Pam Now if you were sitting next to me I could tell you easily, but as I'm not I'll try. If you go on to the family search site and click on search, on the left and column there is All Resources Ancestral File Census International Genealogical Index Pedigree Resource File US Social Security Death Index Vital Records Index Search Family History Web Sites Hope your with me? If I want to seach for a census listing I click on census, but if you click on all resources it list everthing USA, Canada IGI etc, now it is on the British census that my family are listed on this, but arn't when I just click on census. Hope that makes a bit more sense. Let me know Lynda

Hi Linda, Can you go through that again for the hard of understanding? I have looked time and again for my great grandfather or his family on 1881 without success. I have tried all variations I can think of for the spelling of his name which was John Boon. He was born ( if the 1891, 1901 census and his marriage and death certificates are to be believed) c1860 in London or Brighton. He was a fruit hawker by trade. His father was also named John Boon and was a coach painter by trade, deceased by 1886 according to John jnr's marriage certificate. Any help would be most appreciated. Pam

Thanks for that Lynda. I actually have a theory that if you can't find a relative someone else can, just by looking at exactly the same site that you have already tried. I have sometimes been known to find things for other people when they've already looked. Sometimes you find people and then when you look again they aren't there. Wierd! Helen

When I want to find someone on the 1881 (family search) census I click on the census heading. I had one family I couldn't find, and one day by mistake clicked on all resources, and put in the name, and there was my family under the census heading paragraph. So if you have a family you can't find try this, it may help. Lynda
