Re 2nd Battalion..3rd Regiment of Kent.. depending on the dates..they were stationed at Limerick..Canterbury..Shorncliffe..Parkhurst...(my records are in 1858......You could try Kew Archives.. I sent for my GGrandfathers Military records and were sent to me...had to pay....Also Forces of War could be helpful...I googled and got onto sites but not much luck in getting results Im afraid...We all seem to be in the same boat....missing greatgrandfathers ..

This is an extremely old thread Dale, but what you could do is google The Buffs and select the following result

Buffs, Royal East Kent Regiment Museum Collection
www.armymuseums.org.uk/.../0000000020-buffs-royal-east-kent-regim...
British Army Museums Ogilby Trust - find information about Buffs, Royal East Kent Regiment Museum Collection, including museum opening times and facilities.

The link woud take you to the relevant page of the British Army Museum site - then research all the component regiments to work out which one was in Limerick in the relevant time frame.
You could always use the contact email address on that page to ask to be pointed in the correct direction

In relation to the Buffs..I have a greatgrandfather who joined the Buffs in Limerick in 1857.. He was sent to Malta 1858...I am also having difficulty in tracing this man..
He was with the 3RD Regiment of Kent..2nd Battalion.. Is there a site for Limerick Buffs....

Hello Jane. Why do you think George Sandy was attached to the Buffs? He was married in Dover, presumably to a girl who came from Dover but as he was then in the Army Pay Corps he could have been serving anywhere. No George Sandy died in either World War. If you want to find out more about him you need to get at the records held in Kew. Regards. Keith

Hi Jane, Yes these Buff are a difficult lot to find, as you say. the only places I can pin him down are the 1881 and 1891 censuses. I am now even more intrigued about his army service. My cousin came all the way from New Foundland to try and search for him in Canterbury, but had no luck! I am sure these details are buried deep in the archives at Kew, but living in Lancashire, that is not a possibility for me to visit. It looks as though Malcolm has found you some places your relative could have been. Good old Malcolm!! You could try the Canterbury office and see if they can help you. I found his details on a web site for when he was in the HEIC in India Campaign in 1857-59 and then he joined the British Army after that. I feel sure that he spent some time in Ireland with him marrying an Irish lady. Hope you are successful. Thanks to Malcolm for his help as well. Margaret

Margaret, What is it about The Buffs? They seem to be difficult to pin down! My illusive Gt Uncle George SANDY was a new recruit in Canterbury in 1901. Next news was in 1906 when he got married in Dover. The cert said he was a Sergeant in the Army Pay Corps - but I guess that meant he was 'attached' to The Buffs. We have lost him after that. I don't think he fell in WW1, but my late father used to say that 'nobody knew what became of George' ... really helpful stuff! Should you stumble across more info about the later exploits of the Buffs, I'd be very grateful to know about it. Good luck with your own quest. Kind regards Jane

Hi Malcolm, Thanks for that. He was out of the army in 1881, living in Hougham Kent, but I notice that there was one for Kilkenny Ireland. He married an Irish girl from Limerick. Do you happen to know if there was a barracks in Limerick before 1870, as my grandfather was born in 1870 at Aldershot Barracks, South Camp, or was it just Kilkenney. I know the Buffs set up a Barracks there after the India Campaign for Queen Victoria. Regards, Margaret

I have looked on the internet and found some info on Aldershot Barracks South Camp where my great grandfather was stationed in 1870. I believe he was posted to Dover after this, as three of his children were born there. I have looked on the Dover History site but it is not giving me info on the 2nd Battalion 3rd Buffs Regiment. The regimental site in Canturbury is not much help for this period and area, unless I am looking in the wrong place!! Any ideas please? Margaret
