Thanks Bob for your help, does it always connect onto Ancestry as soon as you put in a name? Margaret

Kel, so far my experience of both has been more positive for 1837, with BMD I have got some blackening over some of the pages through which I couldn't read anything, but the 1837 was crystal clear, useful to have both options though I suppose.

Hi Val I've used 1837online and found that their images are as hit and miss as the ones I've seen on the FreeBMD site. I have also seen GRO images in three different libraries. Two of these on fiche and one on film. I found the film version impossible to read and the fiche versions also very small lettering, very hard on my ageing eyes. The glory of a scanned image is that it can be downloaded and magnified etc. to gain a better view of it and all in the comfort of your own environment. Kel

If the images are the same as we transcribe from, then I must add that they are far better quality on 1837 online

Kel I had heard of this before but it seemed too good to be true. I will definitely investigate further. Many thanks. Helen

Just been onto FreeBMD and found out that you can look at images of GRO index pages. I don't know how long this facility has been available, as I had the search page in my favourites for ease of use. I happened to go to the 'main page' to see if the site had been updated and noticed a button marked 'view images'. I've had a nose about and I like what I see the images are a bit slow to download (me being on dialup) but I've found the best format to download is *.pdf format. This facility is similar to the 1837online.com site.but it costs nothing. The records aren't complete yet but in time this resource is going to be invaluable. I've already found one relative who had been mistranscribed by checking the GRO images.
