Jane, we all started with basic searches, so try this: enter "google" in the search box above, that gets you several threads with google tips, especially "Gen. Tips on using Google" And as someone there said, "even when you think you know it all, you can always learn some more !" I still find find it exciting, when I manage something more complicated and get some hits ! Good Luck !

Thanks Helen and Bob, That's brilliant - I'm not very good at doing anything more than the basic searches in Google. I'll practice on some more things I need to find. Ta very much. Jane

Bingo !!!! enter "E.C.White" basingstoke in Google, and you get 2 hits for E.C.White, timber merchants ! http://www.maxlove(.)co.uk/canal.htm http://www.canalsguide(.)co.uk/bstoke/images/lostcanl/lost12.html

Try putting it in brackets and using the fullstops E.C. There may also be some information at the local record office.

Has anyone got any idea how I could find out anything about an old firm of timber merchants, Messrs E.C. White & Son in Basingstoke. They must have been around in the 1920s or 30s as my grandfather was supposed to have been a manager there. Trouble is if you put EC White into Google you get thousands of references to European Community White Papers! Jane
