Another thought: why do you think George Brown who married Ada is the same as David George Cook Brown on the 1901 census? They sound like two different people to me. I would imagine that if you had some extra names to differentiate you from all the other George Browns in the world you would certainly use them on official forms like marriage certs. Helen

Hi Rachel Just South East of Colchester there is a place called Blackheath. I typed in Blackeheath essex into Google ahd I tried the first site - there was a small map which enlarged if clicked on. Blackheath lays between the B1025 & B1026. Hope this helps Liz

Rachel If it says London Blackheath, I would take it as meaning Blackheath in London (nextdoor to Greenwich). This could be a mistake on the part of the enumerator - I have relatives who seem to have different birthplaces on different censuses, but they are usually quite near. Blackheath in London isn't near Lexden. On the other hand, don't dismiss Blackheath because he was married in Lexden. My greatgrandmother was born in Cornwall but married in Richmond. I had a problem tracking down another great grandmother as she had Langley on the census, and Langley is v. near to where she lived most of her married life. However I found out she was born in Langham which was many miles away, though still in Norfolk. I'd wasted ages looking for her in the Langley parish baptisms! Helen

My gg grandfather David George Cook BROWN appears on the 1901 census as born in London (Blackheath). However the only birth record I have found which could be him states the birth district as Lexden in Essex. I believe he married Ada Elizabeth NICHOLLS in Lexden (recorded as David BROWN), and so I am inclined to believe that he was also born there. In this case, where would Blackheath have come from? Or am I just looking at the completely wrong birth?!
