thankyou all for your replies, i emailed 1837 and a nice bloke there done a search for me, the reason that i could not find her was because the name had been mistranscribed, or maybe its yet another new spelling of the surname, either way she's been found. many thanks once again nardia

Sorry Lynda it's that it keeps coming up, but I should know that it will as more people take the the hobby up. The advantage of GRO/1837/FREEbmd etc is that they are taken from the national indexes so cover the whole country. The disadvantage is they contain many omissions and errors. This is inevitable as they were all copied/transcribed from the original local records. This does not mean that the local registers are complete, some events were never registered. In the seventies some bright some bright spark at GRO had an idea to re-type some of the earlier handwritten indexes. They were not checked very well so more errors came in. THEN THE ORIGINALS WERE BURNT!! Of course the local records are less accessible but the local county BMDs will help here they are taking the records from the original local entries not from GRO index though this may not be totally accurate when done. Bob .

Hi all, i must admit this has been brought up before, what some people forget is, it is not birth date's but registration date's, ie my dad was born june qtr 1926 but he do'es not show up till sept qtr 1926,(original birth date is on the cert) you have 6 week's to register a birth death or marriage so if you cant find a birth or record for that qtr try the next, normally you will find them. If you are sure of the qtr and year and it is not there get in touch with 1837 and if it is proven that the volume you require is missing(which happened to me) they reimberse credit's and in my case looked up the relevant info i needed. At this moment in time i feel they are trying to be fair, because with freebmd now giving image's they are losing out, and eventually there will be no need for them as it will be made redundant. hope this is of help Shan

Hi Robert Although you are fed up saying it, I've never seen you say it so be gentle with me! If you want to see ALL births for an area, you need to go to that area, and look at the District Registry. Is this right? Lynda

I would just like to add that when I said 1837 is complete, I only meant as complete as your likely to get. Also, don't forget that those that you can't find are quite often there but mistranscribed under another spelling as I have found out more than once. Chrissie

AAAH!! I am getting fed up of saying this ! !837 is an image of the GRO indexes. They are thousands of entries missing from them, all records are held locally by district registrars. If you want to seriously find your ancestry stop reying on 1837/GRO they are a joke!

I'm afraid that there are omissions, but they are in the original index, not on the website. For example I couldn't find the index to my father's marriage in 1938, although I have the original marriage certificate. I also couldn't find the record of the marriage of either of his sisters, who were also married in 1937 / 1938. But in all three cases I found the record of the marriage by looking up their spouses' surnames.

It's as complete as human error allows for. By 1945 near enough all births were registered, and if your rellie has ever been in possession of her own birth cert - and I can't imagine getting through 20th century Britain without one - then she was definately registered!

Have you looked at the two ¼s either side? She might have been born late in December for instance.

Try Jan Qtr 1946. People were often not registered until the next Quarter. Cheers - Chris p.s. 1837 is complete
