I can't get it to show no matter whether I use * or ( )! Put in www then workhouses dot then c o dot u k -what a palaver! Take out the spaces and put dots between abbreviations and after www and workhouses. I think that's OK!

Hi Chrissie Thanks for that, I will try pauper. Hi Jan Could you post that like again. Do you know if it gives the addresses of workhouses etc? Thanks Lynne

You could try 'pauper'. Links to workhouse sites, some of which contain inmate lists:

My Grandmother, in the workhouse in 1881, aged 4, was just listed as Scholar. Chrissie

Thanks Sheila and Kevin I hadn't thought of those. No joy with either though. Would all children in homes have been included in census? Lynne

My great aunt was listed on the 1901 census in the Croydon Covent and orphanage as "scholar inmate" She was 13 years old. It's worth a try. Good hunting Sheila.

Good afternoon all I wonder if anyone has any suggestions over what I could put in the 'relationship' search box on Ancestry to search the 1871 census for three elusive children. I think they were in a childrens home by 1871 and have so far tried inmate, patient and orphan. This is almost my last idea for finding them, unless it is possible to search the 1871 by address. I have tried searching by name, age, birthplace etc. Thanks for any suggestions Lynne
