Hi Margaret The number corresponds to the number of errors in the register so far. Each error has to be numbered and initialled. If the registrar makes an error in entry number 29 and it it is the first mistake in the register then that numbered error is number one and so on. The number shown doesn't correspond to another entry. They have to cross through the mistake and write the correct word. This correction and numbered error has to appear on the certificate which has to be a correct reproduction of the original. They also usually list all the errors in the front blank page of the register so they know what numbered error they are up too. If their concentration was interupted, by a crying baby say, then they could make several errors in the same entry!!! Phew. Hope this helps. ( and makes sense ) Deborah

Greeting's Margaret. . . I'm lead to believe that if the registrar makes a mistake. Then he has to make out a fresh entry So the 13th. relates to see Entry No. 13. and he puts his initials on the end right side outside the main body of the certificate. If there is no mistakes then a oblique line going from left to right, again outside the main body of the certificate. But if I'm wrong then some one will put you right. MIKE.

I have the birth cert of my great grandfather born 13 MARCH 1868. In the name column is written Sampson which is then crossed out. Above the crossed out name is written 'No.13' and then below it is written Samson. Over to the right of the cert is written 'Thirteen' and below initials T.J.P (the registrar is Thomas James Proudlove" Has anyone else had this experience please?
