thanks for your replies Chloe & Helen. The Jepps you have found in 1881 & 1871 are my family. John did marry after mary died and so William is a Half brother to Mary and john. Ther was another sister as well Margaret My Grt Gran) she moved back to the borders to live with her mothers family, but I cant find anything on Mary b hawick 1866. They don't seem to be mentioned in 1881 I can't find her death or her grand parents in 1881. I think I will send for the certificate of John Blacklee Jepps to see if it is the correct john. does any one Know if there's an 1891 census on line for essex ? Iv'e tryed Ancestry and they're not on that.

It sounds promising. No harm in tracing it some more, is there?

I have never heard of either Blacklee or Jepps, but they might be very common in other parts of the country. It could be a coincidence, but also worth looking into to see if you can find a link. I had a gt gt grandfather called Emmets Matthews and two of his grandsons by different children have Emmets as their middle name. I have come across another Emmets Matthews with a different first name and would love to see if he is related. Good luck Helen

Whilst researching Jepps I have come across a John Blacklee Jepps living with his family in 1901 at 7 manor Villas (teviotside)in Labeth . The mother (Mary) of the John Jepps I'm looking for was born at Blacklee Cottage Hobkirk nr Hawick in the Scottish Borders and the river that runs through the town is called the Teviot. she died in 1871 in Chelsea. I've never heard of a name Blacklee before do you think I,m onto somthing or is it just coincidense?
