Any Ideas Where I Can Look For Passenger Lists fo

The family think our aunt sailed to Canada (don't know which port) in 1927. Definitely on the SS Duchess of Bedford, Canadian Pacific Line. We know they settled in Quebec when they first arrived. Have looked on Ships List site but it is not giving me any answers to Annie May Himsworth (nee Winterbottom). We think she was married at the time of her departure. We have a post card without any date on it saying that they had set sail on Friday at 4.30!! Any ideas where else to look please? Margaret

Hi Ann, Thank you for looking for me. My aunt was born 1901 and she supposedly sailed in July 1927 (from a cousin who said she was 9 months old when Annie sailed)!! This would make her 27 at the time of sailing. I will take a look at the site you mentioned. Thank you, Margaret Can't find the site you mentioned, nothing to do with immigration that I could see. Is that the correct www?

Hi Margaret: I tried the website; it "corrected itself" and popped me into the Canadian Archives website http://www*collectionscanada.ca/index-e.html (replace * with .) There you choose ArchiviaNet (upper right side) then you choose Immigration Records. Immigration Records (1925-1935) Surname: Himsworth Given name: Annie Age: 29 Sex: F Nationality: En Date of arrival: 1928/12/15 (YYYY/MM/DD) Port of arrival: Saint John , New Brunswick Ship: DUCHESS OF BEDFORD , Canadian Pacific Reference: RG76 - IMMIGRATION, series C-1-c Volume: 1928 volume 5 Page: 192 Microfilm reel: T-14852 There's also a record for a Harold Himsworth. He sailed in August of that year. I had forgotten about the Immigration Records. Good thing I was being nosy and checking this thread. :~)

Hi Lisa, How are you? Well I think that may be the right one as Harold was her husband and he went before her, but the story goes that she was pining so much she followed him before he had chance to get a job. Love is a wonderful thing!! It looks as if my older cousin was given duff info doesn't it? I will go on site and have a good nosy round. Take care, Love Margaret Update: I had a look on the site and I still couldn't get the records up with the info you both gave me BUT, I have managed to find the buriels and dates of their deaths on Saskatoon's Lawn Cemetry web page, So I am really pleased about that. I also re-checked her birth details on FreeBMD and she was recorded as being born in Sept qtr 1901. Her actual birth date is 22.5.1901. So someone got the record wrong with her age on entry!! Thanks anyway to you both. I appreciate your time and troble looking for me. Margaret X

Margaret, The Sept Quarter entry on BMD is only when her birth was registered, they may have been late getting the paper work done! Barbara

Hi Barbara, Yes I realise that the registration and birth date may differ! No wonder we can't find some of these relatives lol What I was trying to say, in a not very good way, was that there is 2 years difference between her birth date and the date that was given on the Immigration Entry. I suspect that it may have been the usual mis-transcription error. Good job I know her actual birth date or I may have been led up the wrong path!! Many thanks, Margaret

Am a little confused as to the website's name. Could someone look just in case, for my great-uncle Isaac Newton,, please? - went early 1900s to Canada, but don't know whereabouts. He was born 1878 in Buckinghamshire. Have searched lots of passenger lists including Ellis Island. He's gone awol! Thank you for reading this. Joy

You can follow Lisa's addy or go to Resource Centre and look for Immigration List. The addy is http://www/theshipslist.com and find immigration lists. Either one will take you to the same place. Best of luck, Margaret

Hi Margaret: Haven't been here much lately, was working fulltime this week (usually work parttime) and we were trying to plan my older son's Eagle Court of Honour. Whew, he had the Court tonight, so I'm back to researching again. I haven't heard from mum's cousin regarding our Ibbies; I'll start looking around on my own on Monday. Perhaps we'll get somewhere!! I found out where my Mumford ancestors are buried (in Toronto) and the people working in the office have told me they would be happy to take a photograph of the headstone. Perhaps you could contact the Saskatoon cemetery and see if they would be kind enough to do the same for you? Also Margaret, I have several ancestors who "forgot" their ages either when they entered Canada or on the 1871 Canadian census. For whatever reason, Annie may have changed her birthdate. Patricia: Glad you found helpful information! Good thing that Ann suggested the site, as I had forgotten all about it. Another site that I use is InGeneas, but I usually only use it to see if there are records available. It is free to check records, but if you want full details, you have to pay and sometimes you can get the records elsewhere for free. (What I'm trying to say is I pay for the records when I know I can't get them elsewhere.) http://www.ingeneas(.)com/free/index.html remove ( ) Joy: I'll look around for a little bit tonight (it's almost midnight here) and see if I can find anything.

Joy: I've been looking through the Newton's on the 1901 census on the off chance he arrived in Canada by 1901. I know you are looking for Isaac, but since I couldn't find any (with the correct age), I thought I would look for those Newton's born around 1878. There is a Birt Newton who was born in 1878 in England. I stopped looking in the "B's", since I don't know Isaac's birth month. If you are having trouble finding Isaac, keep in mind that he could have used his middle name. I "lost" my gggrandfather on the 1871 census only to discover that he used his middle name! Here's the 1901 census; however it has only been about 75% transcribed: http://automatedgenealogy(.)com/census/NationalSummary.jsp I'll see if there are any other sites to try.

Joy, this doesn't help you find Isaac, but have you used GenCircles before? http://www(.)gencircles(.)com/ There are a couple of postings of your Isaac (I believe). Perhaps these people are your distant relatives? If you haven't used the site before, type Isaac Newton, born 1878 and three contacts pop up (two are most likely regarding your Isaac).

Joy Report 1 Aug 2004 13:32

Thank you very much, everyone. Yes, great-uncle is on gencircles, put on by distant cousins. They may have put me on, too! Hope not without asking me though. He didn't have a middle name. He was christened in July, and his birth was registered in the September quarter. He was born in Hughenden. Also known as Ike. I have searched the online 1901 and 1906 indexes, couldn't find him, and have searched several passenger lists. I'll find him one day! Joy

Hi Margaret, My Father emigrated to Canada in 1929. A government sponsored scheme. He was forced to return to Wales because of a previous los of a thumb, and this affected his work on a farm. I found his details on the site mentioned by others. I already knew the ships that he had sailed in, so I wrote to Canadian Pacific and they sent me photos of the ships. All helps to plump out our family histories. Roy White

Hi Roy, What a good idea, as you say, it will help to tell their story. Thank you for that. Margaret
