Durham gaol..why??

Go to The National Archives website - they have a feature on Tracing your criminal ancestors. Prison records are kept either at Kew or at the county record office. If it was a noteworthy crime, it might also have been covered in the local papers, so worth contacting either the record office or the county library too. Helen

hi. It seems that I have 2 ancesters, married at the time, who were in durham gaol in 1912, which meant their 6 year old daughter was put into care. Any suggestions on how I could check why they were put in there? I am very curious as to what the crime could be as to leave a 6 year old parent-less. Hope it wasnt something too terrible!!!!
