Thanks all, I've tried finding Bidolph in all its various forms mentioned as a first name (I've tried putting it in the census, FreeBMD etc to see if there was ever anyone of that name in this time frame) but I only seem to be able to find it as a surname. Although it could be worse - my dad apparently had a (male) friend called Pinkie, and no-one knows what his real name was! Hannah

Kim At least two of those CHILDs are on Free BMD so I guess they are genuine.

Obediah (say it with a Yorkshire accent). Sounds like a Borrower to me.

Just looked up some yorkshire names put in Baron Child in the 1881 lds website and see what his poor brothers and sisters are called! Was there too much Ale in the house, or is there something strange going on :~)) Kim

Thanks for looking. This set of brothers seem particularly keen on odd three letter nicknames - we have a Thomas known as 'Tot' as well - again apparently quite common. Hannah

I have had a look in one of my names books and it mentions Biddy. A pet form of Bride or Bridget but no mention of a masculine version! Leigh

Hello all, Does anyone have any suggestions for what the first name 'Bid' could be short for? It is the name of one of my gt.grandfather's brothers, who was from the Yorkshire Dales, and was born in the early twentieth century. My mother said that it was fairly common when she was growing up, but has no idea what it stands for. Thanks, Hannah
