I have traced a number of ancestors through 4 and 5 censuses and the place of birth has changed. I am quite sure the explanation was that different people provided the data, and didn't always bother if it was totally accurate (or they were simply mistaken). When children were small it would be the father or mother who provided the data, but as they grew up it was possible for an elder son to have provided it (perhaps because the father was away from home) and then the mistakes would get made, especially if family moved about.

It could be that the info on the census was given by someone else, and they just assumed he was born where he was living. I have the same with one of mine, one census she was born Cardiff, the next it was Bristol. But as she was listed as being both Welsh/English speaking, I am assuming she didn't pick up Welsh in Bristol!!!!

Hi I was looking for a family and I found them on the 1891 census and then I think I found them on the 1901 census but on the 1891 census it makes no mention of the father being born in Worcestershire and on the 1901 census this where it says he was born I have just sent for the marriage certificate they married in Berkshire and that is where they were living in the 1891 and 1901 census do you think he was born in Worcestershire or is it a mistake on the 1901 census, hope you can understand this Margaret
