Witnesses to Marriage

Does anyone know if it was ever standard practice to have FOUR witnesses to a marriage? I have two marriages in 1922 and 1923 and both have four witnesses. Thanks Lynne

I had 3 at mine all our brothers and sisters so one didnt feel left out. jan x
