I am trying to find my g-g-granfather & family, Edward Roberts and wife Elizabeth. Have them on 1901 census where Edward is in Burslem, Stoke on Trent aged 40 and listed as being from Oakenshaw in Lancashire. Elizabeth is listed as aged 41, from Millsburg in Yorkshire. On 1891 they are also in Burslem S-O-T but Edward is 33 so ages dont match although eveything else does. can't trace birth/marriage of Edward or anything before 1891 - does anyone know where Oakenshaw, Lancs and Millsburg, Yorshire are? I can't find them on any map. They have 8 children who were all born in Burslem, S-O-T, the first one in 1883 (jane). Any help much appreciated as I am a bit stuck now. Thanks Sam

OAKENSHAW Oakenshaw, a hamlet in the township of Breightmet, parish of Bolton, hundred of Salford, 1½ miles N.E. from Bolton. (3) The New Lancashire Gazetteer or Topographical Dictionary 1830 Couldn't find a Millsburg - wonder if The enumerator in Burslem couldn't understand her Yorkshire accent when she said 'Middlesborough'? Thanks very much to both of you. I have since found that Millsburg changed its name, possibly to Middletown in Yorkshire although knowing where Oakenshaw is will be a great help to me. I know what you mean about ages on census returns - all very confusing when trying to trace a birth! I did know about John but can't find him on 1901 census or 1881 assuming he was born then) and there are lots of John Roberts births in the area at the time so can't really send for certificates. Thanks again for your help. Sam

Samantha I too thought it may be Openshaw. If you want to email me with the full details and a possible address I will look on my (just received!) 1871 Lancashire census for you. Lynne
