I applied for a death cert (liverpool registery) from southport, and recieved it within 5 days. Just a thought that applying there may be quicker. Sue

Hello Sue, I read a notice on GC saying it was quicker to go straight to the city or town of were the event happened to get the cert.

Hi Melvyn - All my certs come direct from the Register Offices. I have never used Southport but then I have never used Liverpool either! Every office I have dealt with has taken less than a week and quite often I have had them back by return. Eileen

Melvyn I think this just proves how variable offices are - perhaps the delay is due to staff being away on holiday! I've nearly always used the GRO Southport online ordering service as I find it convenient and am generally satisfied with it. I have used Cambridge, Richmond Surrey and Gloucester register offices for certificates and they have all been virtually by return of post. There are however some London boroughs which do not issue certificates for genealogy purposes. Such is the variation amongst different registrars. I hope when you get your cert it provides the info you're looking for! helen

Hi, Some very busy register offices refuse to do searches or issue certs at all and refer enquiries to the ONS. Family history is a low priority in local offices and certs for that purpose have to go to the bottom of the pile while they deal with day to day registration of BMDs. Gwynne
