I think it's because they use a laser to record the disk and we think of high powered burning lasers. The second use is when you throw the disk on the fire cause it hasn't copied right! Bob

Sue....in order to burn a CD disk you need, first, a CD burner. Second, you need a program installed on your PC that can process the burn. Windows XP comes with CD burning software or it can be obtained else where. If your PC didn't come with a CD burner, that is something that would need to be purchased. The CD tray on your PC is a CD player....unless of course, as I mentioned above, your PC came with CD burner, in that case you would be able to both play and burn CDs. J

The next time I back up, can I just put a disc in, instead and then just click on disc when the drop down comes up, I gather that will hold more information than a disc, is that right?

They (floppys) are a bit long in the tooth Bob, but still a fairly secure backup. (Has anyone got hundreds laid about doing nothing like me?) You can still extract data from 5 1/4 " floppies 20 year old. (anyone remember them, they really were floppy) cdrs and flash memories even seem to erode. I suppose you still can't beat a paper copy in the attic (barring fires). Bob

ue Personally I wouldn't trust my hard won data to a floppy. CD writers are v cheap now and they are much more reliable Bob

It would have said "Disk Full"

Thanks for your advise, my son has just told me to put another floppy in and click format, I have done that and the back up seems to be ok, do you think that that floppy was full? Sue

You have an unformated floppy. You need to format it first then you can store things on it.This should be the A drive. You can buy them pre-formated but its always been said better to format them on the machine. You can write protect it with the slider when you have finished. Bob
