I've ordered most of my certs on-line. I've only gone direct to local offices if I've needed clarification, and I've 'phoned first to confirm. I recently contacted a local office about a birth, where there were 4 possible candidates. They got back to me to let me know that they'd checked 3 that didn't tally, so no. 4 was probably right - but they didn't know for sure cos that register (from 1838) was "lost". I've had to go to the GRO after all. But as Geoff says the local offices don't use the index so I'm still no wiser as to which of my 4 references is right. The Gro charge £11.50 for a 3yr search of the records, but that has to be done over the phone or by letter, can'tv do it online. Helen |

If you order from the local Register Office, note that the GRO Index number (quarter, volume page) is no use at all - it is not part of the local filing system, just the national one. |
