In the late 1800's did both parents have to be present for the fathers name to be put on a birth cert or could the mother possibly have the fathers name put on without any proof? Sue:-) |

Sue "the Registration Act of 1875 "The putative father of an illegitimate child cannot be required as father to give information respecting the birth. The name, surname and occupation of the putative father of an illegitimate child must not be entered except at the joint request of the father and mother; in which case both the father and mother must sign the entry as informants". For further info, please check http://home.*clara.*net/dixons/Certificates/births.*htm remove * first. Helen |

Sue altough that's what the law said there was no requirement to produce a marriage cert so some lied and gave a married name. Bob |

My Great Grandmother claimed she was married (and she wasn't) and made a fathers name up when my Grandfather was born in 1895. |
