There are many many records that are NOT on the IGI precisely because the Churches did not allow them access to the registers and that is why the IGI should be used with great care. Northants area is very low on IGI as one example. They are updated occasionally. They do also appear after 1837 until approx 1895 although can be very occasionally later than this. Janet

I contacted one church in Essex and was able to "order" their computer printout for my family. I found out at that time that someone in the church had not allowed the LDS to copy their records. Perhaps other churches wouldn't allow their records to be copied, which would explain why some records are not on the LDS site.

LDS usefulness is variable. I have found stacks of info about some branches of my family and zilch for others.

Although it doesn't cover all parishes, and you need to check facts with the original registers I have found the IGI useful as an index of baptims and marriages pre civil registration 1837, don't think they put many records on after that date because the GRO registers were available for later years.

Thanks Judith. I wondered if perhaps the LDS online wasnt updated, as I find far more of my rellies on the other popular updated websites. I only seem to find LDS online useful for the 1881 cesus. Sheila.

I think I remember reading that they no longer update the IGI with extracted records as they go on the vital records database now (which is not online) I think they do update with data which has been submitted by individuals - ancestral files etc but perhaps someone else knows for sure. Judith
