Missing Birth, Marriage and Death - can the census

Henry Pringuer is certainly that one in the 1891 census as he was a Professor of Music, however the JG Pringuer which may have been Julia, seems not to tally, as in the 1881 census she was already 28, therefore she would have been 38 by 1891. Another mystery! I suspect that the Beatrice Maud Griffin could be right as Beatrice was born in Lambeth. I don't know where I got Beatrice May from - I think my brain made it up!!! David

David, Bear in mind that the couple could have been cousins sharing the same surname. Mum then may have married someone else at a later date and died with a different surname. Thus explaining why Dad was a batchelor at his '2nd' wedding and why you can't find a death in the Pring* surname for the Mother. Possible ?? This is a suggestion from experience of my own Grandparents. Elaine :-)

Watch out for transcription errors - Pringeur and Prinquer appear on FreeBMD, and Pringeur on 1901 census. All in Kent.

I suggest Henry did indeed marry Julia in 1872 and that in 1891 she was still alive. I had a look on the 1891 census and came up with Pringuer, Henry Visitor married aged 39 music professor born Canterbury Cambridgeshire (sic) in the household of Montague Hibberd in Stoke Newington RG12/179 folio 59 p 56 and Pringuer, J G Head married aged 33 (female) living on own means place of birth NK at 39 Stamford Road, Fulham RG12/51 folio 103 p26 She is living alone, no sign of Beatrice. If this is Julia it narrows down the timescale for her death, although as he claimed to be a bachelor in 1892 perhaps they had separated and he conveniently 'forgot' his first marriage.

This implies he was never married to Julia. How did he explain Beatrice to his second wife? Perhaps Julia was already married and unable to obtain a divorce. Her death would therefore be registered under another surname. Of course if Julia was not married to Henry, he would not need to divorce her or wait for her death to marry.

I have Henry Pringuer's second marriage certificate, and it simply says 'bachelor' David

Henry's second wedding certificate should state whether he was widowed or divorced.

Could the death not have been registered some weren't I have some rellies who are still "technically "alive and I've never found their death certs? Kim

David, In 1881, it just says Beatrice M. Pringuer. Do you have them in 1891? Does it list David as widowed? Look for Pring* when you look through 1837online. FreeBMD is not complete yet. Crista

There are no records of the death of a Julia Pringuer (or any other spelling variations) that I can find between the 1881 census date and when Pringuer remarried in 1892. Could they have been divorced, or could he have remarried while still married to Julia? David

Women's deaths were registered in the name they were known by. If she was married when she died - and her husband was still alive - then she would almost certainly be under her married surname. As she's down as Pringuer on the census it seems likely that whoever registered the death would have used Pringuer.

Thank you for all your replies. It is transcribed as Beatrice May in the 1881 census, but then this may be wrong. If Pringuer was married to Julia Griffin, could her death have been listed under her maiden name. I have ordered the marriage certificate for the Pringner marriage to Julia Griffin. The name is unusual - I have found variations as Pringner and Pringrew! Thanks for your help. Any other theories appreciated, David

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 22 Jul 2004 23:27

The census will only record what information the enumerator was given. Perhaps the couple weren't in fact married but were known as such. Julia may have died and been recorded with her own name, or if she wasn't actually married, she wouldn't need to have died for her 'husand' to marry again.

David Two possibilities - Pringuer is an unusual name, perhaps it was mistranscribed on the birth cert. for Beatrice May. Another idea is that maybe Henry and Julia weren't married, which is why you couldn't find a marriage, and Beatrice May was registered under Julia's name?

David

David Report 22 Jul 2004 22:37

In the 1881 census, Henry Thomas Pringuer is listed as being married to a Julia Pringuer. I can find no record of their marriage. They are also listed as having one daughter, Beatrice May Pringuer, though despite searching all possible dates of her birth, there is no record. Henry Pringuer remarried in 1892, though I can find no record of Julia Pringuer dying before that date. This is pretty much driving me spare!!! Can anyone suggest any solutions to this? Many thanks, David
