Thank you Emma, I have tried all permutations on Ancestry that I could think of, but nothing looked likely. We don't seem to have a James in our family and I don't think he will have strayed too far from Sheffield. **The only likely man on 1901 could be a mistranscription. Wm Woodruff BORN Sheffield, still alive aged 66, living in Nether Hallam, Sheffield. My William was born Glossop Derby. If someone could look at that image for me and tell me who he was living with, I would be very grateful. ** Regards, Margaret

Margaret, I had a look at the bmd index from 1893 - jun qtr 1901 and these are the possibles I found: Sep 1894 James Woodruff 67 Sheffield 9c 203 Mar 1895 William Henry Woodroffe 70 Chesterfield 7b 509 Jun 1895 William Woodroofe 85 Chapel le F 7b 434 Mar 1897 William Henry Woodroffe 79 Reading 2c 263 Jun 1897 William Woodroffe 69 Axbridge 5c 331 Sep 1897 William John Woodroffe 69 Lewisham 1d 738 Dec 1897 William Woodruffe 74 Westminster 1a 368 Mar 1900 William Woodruff 79 Aylesbury 3a 586 Dec 1900 William Woodruffe 73 St Ives 3b 155 Sep 1893 William Woodroffe 63 Loughboro' 7a 82 I included James as it was the only Sheffield one I found. If you think any of these are likely double check them first (I wrote them down quickly!) - you can do it for free now from the main page of Freebmd. If you don't think he's one of these, then another look at the 1901 for a possible mistranscription might be in order. Emma x

Thanks Helen, I don't think he lived after 1901, that is why I am so puzzled I can't find his death. I found his wife's death no problem in 1893! I have tried everything I can think of and I really would like to get this death record. Margaret

Hi Margaret, ancestry isn't complete with its records - I've never been able to find a death between approx 1910 & 1983, although it supposedly has them. You might have to go on 1837online. I did this with my Grandad's grandad. We had a picture of them together in abt 1912 so I started looking then - found his death in 1930. Helen

hanks Crista, Can I please ask who was he living with, the names may ring a bell for other relatives? I have just done another search on ancestry from 1891 to 1920 for anywhere in UK for a death, but it came up blank. Margaret

Margaret, That was from the 1901 census. The decoder shows he wasn't living with any other Woodruufs. Crista

Hi Crista, I don't think so. My father never talked much about his family so these other brothers came as quite a surprise to me! And my oldest cousin can't remember them either, so we are working 'blind' so to speak, not having anyone to ask. Was that William in 1901 a death or on the census? and if on census who was he living with please. Margaret

Margaret, The 66 year old William is from 1901. Where there any more children born after 1881? Crista

Hi Crista, Thanks for that, just been to take my doggy for his last stroll!! Yes that is my family! Frederick was my grandfather and the other sons were all born Dover, Kent, according to the censuses. William was in the army from 1860ish to 1880. He was a labourer in 1881 and 1891. They were all on 1891 census with Mary their mother as well in Sheffield. What year is the William you have found? He said he was 57 on the 1891 census, that makes him born 1834, but on 1881 census the age he gave makes him born 1838*! I don't know who the Edward Loftus is. Still trying to find this lot! Margaret

Margaret, In 1901, there's a 66 year old William Woodruff in Sheffield. It says he was born in Sheffield but this could be a mistake. There's also a Geo Woodruff in Sheffield who was born in Kent, Devon. I'm sure this is actually Dover. There was an Edward Loftus Woodruff born in Dover in 1899 so perhaps one of the sons stayed there? The rest of the sons were old enough to be in the Boer War. I have these sons from 1881 Frederick WOODRUFFE Son Male 12 Aldershot Camp Scholar Henry WOODRUFFE Son Male 10 Dover, Kent, England Scholar Loftus WOODRUFFE Son Male 2 Dover, Kent, England Scholar George WOODRUFFE Son Male 7 m Dover, Kent, England Were there others? Hi Everyone, Thanks for replying! His name was William Woodruff(e). He was born c 1834/38, depending on which of censuses was correct, in Glossop Derbyshire. He lived in Burnt Tree Lane in Sheffield in 1891 and 1893, the date of his wife's death at which he was present. I can find his son Fredk Woodruff on 1901 but no other member of family. Margaret Two possibilities: a) he died before 1901 and you are unable to locate death. b) he didn't die but has been mistranscribed on 1901 census. Have you got a name for him so we can have a look?

I have looked for the death record of my great grandfather between 1893 and 1901. His wife died in 1893 and he was 'present at death' He is not on 1901 census and not in Ancestry, FreeBmd or LDS registers. I have had look up done, and still he can' be found. I also looked on Family History Online. Where do I go from here? This is driving me potty!!** Margaret
