Thanks Ian, I may do that one day, but it's on the back-burner for now. Last I heard it costs 25 Quid and a 6-8 month wait and I am skint at the moment. But maybe one day ??

Bob Glad you could track down the badge in your photo. As a further thought, maybe that picure was taken before he was transferred to a Liverpool Regt? If you are interested, maybe worth a go at finding his service records (about 30-40 pct chance since two-thirds of these records were destroyed in WW2 blitz, but if he served until 1920 then maybe they still exist). WW1 records with the National Archives/PRO, later records still with the MOD. Ian

Christine, thanks for that tip. I found a similar badge there, and Malcolm, to whom I had e-mailed the photo, agrees with me, that it is the the badge of the 23rd County of London Battalion of the London Regiment. Don't know where my Dad got the "Liver Birds" from, though ?? So thanks, Christine, and especially, thanks Malcolm, for being so helpfull !

Hi Bob, I see that Malcolm is kindly helping you in your request, but for anyone else interested there is a fantastic site which helps to identify badges etc. and has loads of pictures of soldiers, German and British, recovering casualties and lots more. I'm sure you'll find it very interesting. Christine http://www.militarybadges.org.uk/mimage/militar1.htm

Bob, Do you or any of your family have his medals? If so, his name, rank and regiment will be on the rim of the British War Medal (silver medal with King Geo V head) and Victory Medal (Bronze, with winged figure of Victory). Ian

My Grandfather was born in and lived in London, served in the trenches, served under Allenby and was gassed in the war. He rose through the ranks to become (Regimental ?) Seargent Major. I have a photo (the only photo !) of my grandfather in WW I uniform. My father said that the "liver birds" were on the cap badge. he reckons that so many regiments were decimated in the war, that they were constantly being reorganised, hence a Liverpool instead of a London Regiment. I realise that this isn't a lot to go on, but it's all I have at the moment. Can anybody say which regiment this could be ?? Thanks, Bob
