I know this might seem a really silly question, but I can't find the 1881 census on FreeCen or Ancestry. Was there one? And if so, where is it?!! Many thanks, Mandy :)

The 1881 Census for England and Wales has already been transcribed and is available free to search online on the Latter Day Saints website together with the IGI and much more at www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp Rose

Thank you so much for your help. I'm still a real dimwit where genealogy is concerned - my trouble is I'm far too impatient and just delved in straight away without looking at the Genes Resource Centre (only realised it existed the other day!). I use Ancestry, 1837, freeBMD etc but keep forgetting to go to Family Search. I told you it was a silly question!! Thanks a lot, much appreciated, Mandy :)

Mandy it's not a silly question if you don't know the answer. It only becomes a silly question when you ask it again:-)

Mandy It took me ages to find there was a Resource Centre on this board. I think there should be a prominent sign on the home page saying "Getting Started?" in big letters. Helen

Mandy, Can I suggest that you contact your local library or record Office. Many of them hold the GRO index for the whole country on fiche which you can search free of charge. I know it is more time-consuming than clicking on Ancestry, but it is free, and you can search to your heart's content!! Try it. Wendy
