I have seen lots of references to Ancestry but have also been told that it is expensive and doesnt have a lot of UK info on it. whats the general opinion from people on this site that have it? Is it worth the money? Thanks

Its worth it just for the censuses alone, you have the 1891 complete, 1901 doing well and the 1871 going great. For this you can check all the names out until you think you have the right one. You will also be able to download the census page. So if you add up what it would cost for just the 1901, and or the train fare the time travelling and the cost of a copy for the others, it shoud work out a lot cheaper. You can join just for the UK side. Irene

I'm an Ancestry fan too - have got loads of information like siblings etc, so it's been worth it for me already. Take Amanda's advice, I didn't realise you could pay in dollars! Current UK price is about £70 which works out at less than £6 a month - pretty good value I think! Mandy :)

I joined just over two weeks ago and have found my elusive great grandparents on 1891 census, ggranmother on 1871 with her parents and grandparents and found her on 1901. I now have her birth certificate. I have to admit I'm new to all this (3 1/2 years so far) but it was worth the £70 and there are more records being added all the time.

Sophie I had a year's sub when I started and got all the gen I needed from 1891 (they didn't have 71 then). I then cancelled my sub, but now they have more I am thinking of rejoining. I also use their England & Wales civil registration. I have to log on, but it is free and is the same info as FreeBMD, I just find it quicker and easier to use as they present the info differently. helen

Hi there, Like everyone else I reckon it's a great site with much info to access. I am on to my second quarter and am thrilled that I have just made a connection concerning my German side via a message I left on the message board Aileenx

Sophie, Just to add to the comments as well as the census look ups its been a great source for Births, Marriages and Deaths registers for some of my Ancestors. I found my great grandfathers marriage listed and when I clicked on the page number there was his wife's name. Its also great to check for other peoples rellies as well as it costs nothing. I like the layout of it as well, much better than the latter day saints which I always seem to have problems with. The only problem on Ancestry I have found is the message boards there are so many and I never know which is the right one for any of the posts, I have given up using it.

Thanks everyone. I think I will join, but it was very helpful to get opinions from people actually using it already.

I use the six pound (now seven pounds plus because they add VAT). You get 20 sets of final results but have to use it up in a week. I wait until I have lots of things to look up and then use it. I am now waiting for them to get more info on line before I buy again. Mind you I am unemployed so the annual or quarterly I think is a waste as once I have found every thing I do not need it until they put new stuff on. I do have lots of lines to look up.
