On my Great Grandads Birth certificate it has got father Joseph White Mother Ann White Formerly Potts The Birth was in Spondon Derby. I've checked the parish records for their marriage and find a Ann Potts married Joseph Brown but Joseph Browns father was a John White so i don't know if joseph white and joseph brown are the same person. Can anyone help?

Hi David Joseph was probably the illegitimate son of a Miss Brown and John White. But he could also be the son of a Miss/Mrs Brown who later married John White - I've seen both examples. He may be christened under either name. If you give some dates and places someone might be able to help you with a census lookup which may help a bit. Hope this helps a bit David

David Severely tempted to make pun about Potts and Black as well as Brown & White. Sorry, v. frivolous mood owing to birthday drinks. Please post info and I'm sure we'll all try to help. Helen

another possibility is that Brown was his stepfather's name -- people raised under a stepfather's name sometimes reverted to their real father's name as soon as they got away from home. Of course that would need John White to be deceased, but they didn't always say so
