originally I thought maybe Green was George's real name, but the Greens in Yorkshire seem to be in the West riding. Maybe they were just mucking about. There's a George a'Green in the Robin Hood story, so perhaps David Greenley wanted his son to have a famous name

Judith Thanks once again for that. Again I'll ask when I'm next at the records office. Robin Why haven't I seen that one? I can't believe it! I'm getting quite excited now. In the parish registers for Folkton/Flixton all of George and Ann's children are christened as Green. But by the time these children get married they have changed their name to Greenley and it stays that way from then on. As you have probably seen there are quite a lot of Greenleys in Muston and Folkton/Flixton but I haven't been able to connect my line to any of them yet. This could be why. I'm off to the LDS site now for a look. Thanks ever so much Robin for pointing that out. Jeanette

don't be scared of the numbers, there aren't too many to sort them all out. Use IGI to figure out all the offspring of the same parents first, and they'll start to fall into place there was a Greenley couple in Folkton or Muston at the time of George's birth, David and Elizabeth. They seem to have baptised some kids at Folkton and the rest at Muston. One of the Muston kids is a George, 1768. For some reason his father was called David Green that day (!) (you're going to tell me this George died at 3 weeks old...)

I've a feeling you would only be likely to find a record of his settlement if he looked likely to become a liablility and there was an examination to send him back to his home parish. If he gained settlement by being employed there's not likely to be anything but its always worth checking if there is an index of settlement examinations at the records office.

Thanks for that Judith. I will ask if the Banns book is available next time I'm at the records office. If he turns out to be from another parish would there be a record of his settlement in Folkton? As it happens Ebberston isn't too far from Folkton so I suppose it could be him on the IGI. I'll see if I can track anything down for the Ebberston George. Trouble is the area is awash with Greenleys! lol Jeanette

If the Banns book for Folkton survives it will tell you which parish your George was living in at the time, either 'of this parish' or the name of the parish he was in. Of this parish means he was living there at the time but might of course have been born elsewhere and then gained settlement in Folkton, if another parish is named again it might not be where he was born but at least would give you another place to look. Not sure you could prove the Ebberston George is yours, but you could check whether there are any references to this one's death or marriage that rule him out. If not and the parishes are reasonably close then he'd be a definite maybe.

The gentleman in question is my 4x great Grandfather George Greenley. I have him on the 1841 census aged 65 living in Folkton/Flixton Yorkshire. I have a burial entry from the parish registers for Folkton for him which says he was buried 24 December 1850 aged 78. I have a marriage entry for him from the Bishops Transcripts - George Greenley and Ann Pashby by Bann July 23rd 1797 in Folkton. My problem is that it doesn't say anywhere where he was born. Would the Banns give me any clue? I searched the Bishops transcripts 10 years either side of 1771 for a birth for him in Folkton/Flixton and he wasn't there. There is a George Greenley on the IGI born in Ebberston in 1771. How would I go about proving whether this George was mine or not? Jeanette **********UPDATE:I finally got round to following this lead up and went to the records office yesterday. And there it was in the Muston parish register as plain as the nose on my face - George son of David Greenly bap. April 10th 1768. I guess the IGI transcriber must have been having a bad day! So I would like to say thankyou very much Robin for pointing me in the right direction. Much appreciated. Jeanette x
