What county do you record ancestors born in if the boundaries have since changed - the county the parish was in when they were born or the county the parish is now in? I was born in Bucks but the town is now in Berks and personally I always say I was born in Bucks cos I was! What does anyone else think? David

Hi David, I was born in Lancashire and I'm staying here. They moved my home town of Barrow into the conglomerate known as Cumbria in 1974. When I registered my son's birth in 2001 and was asked for my place of birth, the computer didn't have an option in its little list for 'Barrow-in-Furness, Lancs' so I'm down on that as Cumbria, which is daft cos Cumbria didn't exists when I was born. David It was Bucks when you were born, so that is where people will look in the future. Just as if you were David on your birth cert and later decided to become Phil. You were still David at the time of the record.

Hi David, my town started off as Stranton then became West Hartlepool as opposed to Hartlepool which is about a mile up the road, our county was Durham. Then in the 70s the powers that be decided to amalgamate so we all became Hartlepool. Then we became Hartlepool Co.Cleveland, then Cleveland was dissolved and we are now just Hartlepool without a county! Anyway when doing my tree I put down whatever the town was called at the time! Talk about confused!!

Listen folks, You think you have probs?? I was born in Leyton, which was then in Essex. So what does that make me! ( and I've never worn white stiletoes in my life!!)

I think you're all right - a birth takes place when and where it does and that can't be changed. Glynis - you think Essex is bad! the town I was born in was Slough so if John Betjeman had his way I wouldn't be here at all lol Helen - it's funny that you make the point about christian names - I have two birth certificates:) But I get your point. I was born in Bristol (the City) when it was part of Avon, but now it is a county in its own right. It the past it was also in the county of Gloucestershire. My dad was born in Somerset, then that became part of Avon too, but is now North Somerset. I pity our future rellies trying to find us !!!!
