That does sound an odd cause of death. Was his family very religious? Perhaps he committed suicide and to spare the family's feelings it wasn't mentioned. I would definately check the local papers though.

Very puzzled that there was an inquest which reached no conclusion! What does it say under "cause of death"? Berkshire Record office website: http://www.)berkshirerecordoffice.org.uk/ remove ) first. Helen

Hi, A lot of coroner's reports are lost as there is no obligation to keep them. However, I have been very lucky with newspaper reports of inquests. Try looking in the local newspapers around the date of the death and the inquest. Gwynne

Margaret How very unusual. I thought that the inquest was held first, verdict was decided and then the death certificate was issued by the coroner. The bad news is that not all inquest papers have survived. You don't say where the accident took place, but I think the first port of call would be the local record office. There's also some information about inquests on The National Archives site here: http://www.catalogue.)nationalarchives.)gov.)uk/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=175 (remove () first) And of course there may be reports in the local newspapers of the time. Again, the record office or local public library should be able to help with this. Happy hunting, Helen.
