Hi, I was really pleased to discover that the 1871 census for Lancashire was now on Ancestry, as I am tracing 2 lines in Stockport, Lancashire!! But..... Ancestry, class Stockport as Cheshire! Both 1881 and 1901 have Stockport as Lancashire!! Am now very confused, help please, which is it???? Cate :-S

Well there's a lot of folk on the Cheshire List who are researching Stockport. I think its more Cheshire than Lancashire.

Stockport registration district is under Cheshire in the Genuki list, and I think census districts roughly corresponded to civil registration districts too.

Looking at a 1922 map, the boundary seems to pass very close to Stockport railway station.

Census districts did correspond to registration districts. Census populations were assigned to Counties afterwards. Stockport is quite difficult, as I understand the historic County boundary ran along the river Mersey, now culverted just on the northern edge of the town centre. Stockport Borough has incorporated parts of the old Lancashire and Cheshire Counties for many years. I believe the Parish Church would be on the Cheshire side of the river, with the town centre, so that is presumably why it would be classified generally as Cheshire, although your relatives could have been living in the Lancashire part of Stockport. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to reply! Looks like I'll have to wait for Cheshire 1871 to be put on Ancestry :-( Cate
