Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 15 Jul 2004 20:38

Helen, my dad and his grandmother both died after gangrene set in - both in the same foot following a blood clot high in the leg after they lost their mobility due to arthritis. I can assure you that you are correct - it is very unpleasant. Maz. XX

The inquest certainly was grim reading, the woman refusing to goto the workhouse yet clearly unable to look after herself ,the saddest thing is her family were just up the road and didn't seem to offer her much help Kim

Twinkle Report 15 Jul 2004 19:30

There is a castle haunted by the screams of a baby who was thrown onto the fire minutes after its birth. I can't recall why the baby was murdered, something about the family's honour or inheritance I think. One of the most frequent causes of infant deaths was being 'overlain', ie the parents rolled on top of him/her during the night and smothered him/her.

Kim I was quite horrified when I found my great-grandmother died of gangrene. Deaths through fire must have been extremely common when people used candles and open fires so much. I remember reading a sad case about an alcoholic mother who was nursing her baby. She nodded off and the baby fell into the fire and was burnt to death. Helen
