McAnne's Gahan-Crazy Report 13 Jul 2004 00:38

HELP! I have spent countless hours trying to find the registered death of my Grt Grandfather's mother. She was alive on both the 1881 & 1891 census, but had died by the 1901. Her last child would appear to have been born 1893/4, so she died between 1894-1901. I have used Ancestry, FreeBMD, 1837online to name but a few, and have drawn a complete blank. Have found her birth and marriage, but seemingly, she never died!! Any tips please? All help gratefully accepted.

What was her name, age and where was she living? I know births and marriages weren't always registered but I think by 1894 all deaths were. I am sure she WAS registered. Is the name one which could be spelled differently? Have you checked the GRO index? Wendy

Hi Wendy - unfortunately it's not an uncommon name - STEVENS, Flora born 1857 Southwark. I've searched both variations of the name, plus used 'soundex'. Haven't look anywhere else but on the 'net' so far - only just into my 3rd week of doing this. Also, unfortunately, not in contact with, or even sure if there are any, living relatives on that side of the family. Still I'm sure persistence will pay off eventually. Anita

Anita, Is it possible that she was widowed and remarried in that space of time? (i.e. therefore her surname would have changed.) Regs Jane

Hi Jane - it's a possibility I suppose, but I don't think so, she was alive and still married to GGF on 1881 Census, and he was shown as widowed on the 1901 census - they also had a child born in 1893/4 - worth a look tho, so thanks for the suggestion. Anita
