HI there, i am wanting to start my own family tree but i do not know where to start. I can get some details from my mother about her family to add on but im stuck when it comes to my fathers (who i am wanting to trace) his name is donald milson and would be in his fifties (i think) and he originally comes from sunderland. Can any one help? i have no idea what sites to go on or where to look.

Hi Sarah, There are people on these boards who have access to Electoral Rolls so if you try putting on another thread with Electoral Rolls in the title I'm sure someone will offer to try to help you. Kath

I fyou are wanting to trace your father to find where he is today then there are two sites that i know of that could prove helpful. 1) www.b4usearch[.]com or .co.uk (Remove the brackets) this site has the last electrol roll. if you put the name into here you may get a lot of hits but one of them could be your father. This site also has the phone book in and will also search that 2) www.missing-you[.]net (remove brackets) this site allows you to search trying to find messages and also allows you to post a trying to find message. I have had great success on this site by finding my fathers cousins after 55years. 3) try google. its a long shot but you never know. use the UK one by putting [.]co[.]uk instead of [.]com and putting the name in inverted commas "name". As for tracing a family tree and going back in time. speak to your parents and ask for their parents names and grandparents names. then use the BMD indexes online at 1837online[.]com (remove brackets) to find the index for their Birth certificate and then order it. Any more questions feel free to ask.

Hello again Sarah, As it happens my son was just on the phone to a friend with access to a fairly recent (oct.2002) Electoral Register and the only Donald Milson they could find on there was as follows:- Donald Milson 10 Honey Hill Road Bristol Avon BS15 4HG He is the only person on the register at that address. Hope this happens to be yours. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Kath.

You could also try the site called 1837online (with .com after it) where you can search for birth certificate records. The basic information you will get from the site is the quarter/year they were born, name and registration district. You then send off for the full birth certificate. You have to pay for this (both the search and the certificate). Hopefully there are not too many Donald Milsons born in the Sunderland area between (say) 1945 and 1955 so you will not have to search for too long. Have a look at the site to see how to do it. Best of luck.
