Thank's everyone for your response.....Joy, I had thought of that for the time.....Janet, yes we have tried the mothers maiden name. The strangeness into this is that the second child (my G / G Grandfather) was registered in 1854. Why register the second child but not the first ? .... I have not looked into the un-named yet of the GRO, I'll certainly check this out...... Helen, the only reason that we have at the moment is that my G / G / Grandfather was a Merchant Seaman and this could be a reason for late registration. We have Liverpool as his birthplace, confirmed by finding them on 1871 Census, .... Has anyone ever had a registered birth in an area different to what following-on records show?, if so we do not have not much chance of finding them in this case. His name was Harry Wentzell / Sadler b Oct 25 1852 Liverpool if anyone can help with the baptism search. Many Thanks for your comments / help, J.C

Perhaps he was registered under the mothers maiden name. Then, for whatever reason, as they didn't marry straight away they decided to just register subsequent children as though they were married. Alternatively, perhaps they hadn't decided on a name for him or he wasn't expected to live and he was registered as just male. These births come at the end of the surname on the GRO. Hope you find him Janet

John It is possible (for whatever reason) that he wasn't registered. Alternatively he may have been registered late, or not in the registration district you expected. When you checked the index, did you go to the bottom of the page as there are often additions or amendments. Also he may only have been registered with surname if they hadn't chosen a name for him. Another thing to try is to see if you can find him in a parish baptism register. Give us his name and we can all have a look or make suggestions! Helen

I cannot find my G / G Grandfather's brother on the GRO index. The family has by word of mouth a date of 25 October 1854/5, Liverpool as his date / place of birth. We have searched the GRO a couple of times trying to find his birth. ..... We do know, because records show, my G / G / G Grandparents never married until 1871, (and another son b 1857), 17 yrs on from 1854. .......... We have not located them on the 1861 Census, but have found them on the 1871, (taken in April),as Husband and Wife, before they married in the July of that year. ??.... They obviously were somewhat slow on the marriage lines, for whatever reason ????. ..... They registered my G / G Grandfather in 1857 (Birkenhead) ......... Apart from this there must have been sometime that he would have needed a b.c, ..... i.e - He emigrated 1878 and I would have thought he would have needed his b.c for his emigration papers ????...... Did it ever become to late to register a birth, with no way of finding the record ???. Where to look next regarding the 1854/5 Liverpool birthdate, has anyone any suggestions ??. Many Thanks, J.C.
