While I was visiting Milton Cemetary in Portsmouth, we discovered my G Grandmother had been buried in a pauper's grave (not sure why) and without a headstone. The grave had been "reclaimed" by another family a decade or so later and the other family's headstone is over the grave. My mother would like to do something about this but not sure what. Crista |

I don't know that you can do anything. They have bought (or leased) the land and so have a right for their headstone, and theirs only, to be placed upon it. Someone mentioned on the board a few weeks ago that they weren't even allowed to put flowers on a grave because it now belonged to someone else. However I don't think a small bouquet is going to cause much offence. |

This is a council run cemetery and, judging by there website: http://www.portsmouth.gov.uk/pcc/leisure/Parks/Cemeteries/LEI_PARKS_Cemetries.cfm they are pretty strict (no kerbs, only stone headstones etc). I wondered if they had an area hwere a small memorial could be placed as for people who were cremated. Bob |

Crista, when the grave was reclaimed after my g aunt died the family of the people that were then buried there never purchased the grave so it makes it straight forward for me to purchase it and put a headstone on it. Do you want me to see if i can find anything out for you tomorrow? Karen. |
