when you order the cert from the gro use reference checking. fill in teh fields for the name of the person being born and also fathers name and occupation matching that on the wedding cert. Then in the reference checking page put all the options you have (this costs £3 I think) . They will then check the details you have against the certificates and send you the one that matches.

You could spend £11.50 and ask the GRO to search a 3 year period for you and give them checking points too, like fathers name. I am doing this at present at there are loads of Richards Woods born in the period mine was born. I hope it works out for you. Fi

You might find on the census that they have brothers or sisters with more unusual names. That might help to confirm the area. Anne

Thank you Kim and Helen; very good tips so far! The Father's names are just as common, but I will do some checks tonight. I will also take a look at the 1901 census. I think they were born in different areas to where their marriage took place because the 10 possible candidates were not born anywhere near the parish district. If anyone can think of anymore tips/strategies then please let me know. Everything helps!

Where did they get married? Chances are they were born not far away. If you have their fathers' names on the marriage certs you could look for them on the 1901 census and see where they were then. You can use the father's name as a check when ordering certs to make sure of the right ones. Helen

coud you look for thefathers (parents) births too, if they have a less common name that may give you a clue as to area,I was lucky my grandfather had exactly the same name as his father and his sister shared her grandmother's name so I was fairly lucky in establisihng the right family.Have you checked the IGI or familyhistoryonline websites for info that may give you a clue. I'm searching for the correct birth records for both my g. Grandparents born in the early 1900's. I know roughly what period they were born from looking at the ages given on their Marriage certificate, but there is around 5 people with identical first, middle and last names born around the same time. I don't know their places of birth, so how do I find out which is the correct entry? Would I have to order 10 birth certificates and compare the Father's names with those on the Marriage certificate? What other search techniques are available to me that you recommend for checking the births? Any help would be much appreciated!!!
