Update....Helmsley parish registers are held by North Yorkshire County Record Office www.northyorks(.)gov(.)uk/libraries/archives/default.shtm (remove brackets). If you know the exact date, place and names (which you do), they can do you a copy of the marriage entry for £4.65. Hope this helps & good luck....

Before 1837 marriages were recorded by the relevant church, so the only thing you will be able to obtain is a copy of the entry in the parish register, not an actual certificate like you can after 1837. You will need to know which church they were married in, and the copies of the registers will usually be held in the county record office. You won't get as much information as you do on a certificate, and it won't necessarily give the father's name.

Is it possible to obtain copies of marriage certificates pre-1837? To establish without the doubt the ancestors of Christiana Stonehouse who married William Day on 24 Dec 1789, I would like a copy of their marriage certificate. Is this possible, and if so where do I obtain it? Thanks for any help, Chris
