Cate, Using the decoder I found Samuel and Matilda together with a Joseph Austin (no Isaac he is with another family), George Beresford looks like he might be in Hartington Upper Qtr and James Austin is in Mappleton, Joseph was the son of Thomas Austin because Matilda did not marry Samuel until 1888 Marriages Jun 1888 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Austin Matilda Ashborne 7b 967 BERESFORD Samuel Ashborne 7b 967 Hope this makes things a bit clearer. What do you think?? Gen

If James Austin/Allen was born 1879 he would be 22 in 1901 so he isn't Joseph. Joseph b 1885 could be Joseph in 1901 with a change of surname/mistake by person filling in census Isaac if age 7 in 1901 would be born around 1894. George would be 12. He may well be at work somewhere at this age. Have you also checked to see if he died? Have you got all their birth certs? Helen

Am very confused, can anyone help to fathom this out?? Here goes...... MATILDA ALLEN had an illigitimate daughter ALICE ALLEN in 1871 (10 in 1881), she then married THOMAS AUSTIN in 1876 and had JAMES AUSTIN in 1879 (2 in 1881), she was widowed by 1881 and living with parents! By 1891 MATILDA had married SAMUEL BERESFORD. ALICE ALLEN (20) was in service and JAMES AUSTIN had become JAMES ALLEN(13) and was staying with his Grandfather. SAMUEL and MATILDA had JOSEPH BERESFORD in 1885 (6 in 1891) and GEORGE BERESFORD (1 in 1891) in 1890! In 1892 ALICE ALLEN became ALICE BERESFORD, and then married a TWIGGE (but thats another story:-S)! Now confusion.... On the 1901 census I have found SAMUEL and MATILDA still together but then there is JOSEPH AUSTIN (17) and ISSAC BERESFORD (7)! I can't find GEORGE BERESFORD anywhere and JAMES AUSTIN and JOSEPH BERESFORD seem to have become one and the same person!!!!! All of the above were born in ALSTONFIELD, STAFFORDSHIRE!! HELP!!!!! Confused Cate :-S
