Many thanks to the 3 respondees. I have narrowed it down to John Stonehouse and Mary Anthony Stonehouse and Esther Sowerby I now need to find a will which names Christiana as the wife of William Day. As I have never previously used wills I do not know where best to look. Any advice please. Thanks again, Chris

I have the same problem - two boys with the same name born in the same village in the same year and both the potential father's names appearing among my man's children! Look for deaths of girls named Christiana before yours was married. There's a good chance several died in childhood. Given that parents recycled names, it might be that one of the dead Christiana's was your girl's elder sister.

I must say I've not yet been so unlucky to have so many with the same name! Could you begin to eliminate some of them by their ages and date of burial? When William and Christiana start having children you might get a clue with 'family' names? You could try searching for wills. Unfortunately there might be several but if Christiana's father was to name her in a will it would say 'my daughter, wife of William Day' Helmsley's not a big place. You could start by assuming she did not go far from home to marry? Good luck, you'll need it! Anne

Part of my ancestry includes a marriage between William Day and Christiana Stonehouse, which took place in Helmsley, North Yorkshire on 24 Dec 1789. As there are at least 20 women in the area of that name, how do I find out which one is the correct one and therefore be able to move further back through her line? Any help would be much appreciated. Chris
