The date was probably not an error, more likely they lost the previous certificate or needed a duplicate for some reason.

Sue I have found a copy of my G Grandfathers death cert and he didnt die during the war, he died in 1958 at the age of 79, So I think that the date on the marriage cert must of been an error Louise

Louise Was your Great Grandfather killed in WW1? The reason I ask is that I have a copy of my husband's Grandparents marriage certificate dated after Grandfather was killed in WW1, seven years after they were married. Grandmother had to produce it to prove she was entitled to a widow's payment. Sue

Hi Louise In 1891 Richard was living in Shrewsbury with his grandfather: 8 Victoria Terrace, Shrewsbury: Thomas Gray, Head, m, 65, Pavior, b. Ireland; Sarah Gray, Wife, m, 67, b. Ireland; George Gray, Son, s, 23, General labourer, b. Salop, Shrewsbury; Richard Gray, Grandson, 12, Scholar, b. Salop, Shrewsbury; Louisa Gray, Granddaughter, 8, Scholar, b. Salop, Shrewsbury. This should be enough to be able to find Richard's birth certificate, which will give his father and mother. Perhaps they died some time after Louisa was born, i.e. 1882-91. Regards Stan

Louise The wedding certificate you have will provide information on both bride and groom's parents and when and where they married may be an indication on where to look next. FreeBMD isn't complete yet, but the 1880s is pretty good. It is likely that if you can't find your relative there or on censuses that he has been mistranscribed. Have you tried looking for Grey/Graye etc. I was a Gray myself before I married and I've been lucky in that all my relatives were Gray in all documents, but their first names have been wrongly recorded quite often. Give us more details and I'm sure help will be forthcoming. Helen

I have have got the marriage cert for my G Grandfather who was born in the 1880s, I have looked on 1901 census and found a Richard Gray living in Market Drayton with his uncle I do know his fathers name was also Richard but there is no one else in the area with that name, also his uncle was born in Ireland. Does any one have any ideas about where else I could look to find some more information on my family, I even drove to Market Drayton and spent the whole day looking around the Cemetry, I have tried 1881 census 1901 and the Bmd index,. but still had no luck.
