Sorry Bridget - never got back on here yesterday!! My gt grandfather's brother apparently emigrated to NZ and my grandfather allegedly stowed away to spend 7 years with him! BUT we don't have any idea of dates or places - only the names Daniel Jennings and Alfred Jennings. I don't know of any on-line newspaper archives for the East End, but you can search at Stratford Local Studies or Tower Hamlets Local Studies. Maybe they provide a search service, but I'm not sure. Otherwise it would be the British Library Newspaper Archive at Colindale in NW London. Maz. XX

Hi Maz, Sadly it's just by date. The home page gives you a choice of papers from around the different provinces (a bit like counties) e.g. Canterbury. You then get the year and month to choose, and then are into a calendar of dates. It is quite time-consuming without broadband(which I don't have!)..I think they tell you the relative download times. It seems ages at first, but I just had something else to read while it loaded! Hope that helps. Were you looking for anything in particular? Have you found anything similar for the East End? My lot are from Shoreditch/ Bethnal Green/ Mile End. Might not see any more replies till tomorrow..must go to bed..it's 1.46am and my addiction to this is getting the better of me! Sue (NZ)

Hi Sue - is it possible to search with a keyword (a surname for example) or just by date? Also, can you tell us please what areas are covered. Thanks. Maz. XX

I've been using a fabulous site for on-line copies of 19th century New Zealand newspapers. They take a while to load and to wade through, but are very interesting, especially if you have dates to follow up. http://paperspast*natlib*govt*nz/ Dots instead of stars Sue (NZ)
