I'm pretty sure it's the same man as his son's (my great grandad) address book for the period has Ernest moving from one licensed premises to another in the same area over the same period. In addition, his marriage certificate in 1883 gives father's name as Etienne Augustine GAU, a farmer, same as my great grandad's father and his own occupation as Chef. He said his age was 43 at the date of marriage. ('My' Ernest was born in France in 1840 and I have his birth certificate with the name of father as Etienne Augustine GAU). There is definitely a Rose Ernestine GAU - father Ernest Edmond GAU mother Celine nee BEAUREGARDE and a Rosa Ernestine GAU born 1878 father Ernest E. GAU and mother Emma (or Kate) COOK. It is the second Rose that married in 1898 because the other one was an invalid and died in 1906. Thanks for your time and help. It all helps me keep an open mind about this. xxx A

I can't stand it. They ought to be there. I know they were hiding. My naughty great great grandad married his second wife while still married to his first in 1883 but they had a daughter born 1878 found on 1837online registered under his name. I've exhausted all lateral thinking LDS online and CD and still can't find Rose or Rosa Ernestine GAU born Gravesend in 1878 , mum Emma COOK born 1856 in London and dad Ernest Edmond GAU born 1840 in France. I have found many suspects including a prisoner but managed to get a newspaper article on him and he has been excluded. Ernest was a chef/ cook/ innkeeper/ various similar occupations. They married in Shoreditch in 1883. If anyone sees these in passing PLEASE put me out of my misery. His first wife and children are in Aldershot under the name Celine GAW and her offspring. (Including another Rose Ernestine born 1876)
